Logitech SoundMan Wave/CD-ROM Installation

This document details installation procedure for the Logitech SoundMan Wave. This is written with the assumption there is a general understanding of working with files and directories under DOS and Windows 3.1x or Windows 95 in order to accomplish the instructions detailed in this document.

Software Installation

To setup the SoundMan SCSI CD-ROM drivers under DOS and Windows 3.1x:

Included with the SoundMan Wave software is the driver Z5380.SYS for the onboard SCSI interface. Paragraph 3.3 of the SoundMan Wave README.TXT file contains a list of older CD-ROMs that the Z5380.SYS driver is known to support. We have not tested the SoundMan Wave board with the newer CD-ROMs. However, we have found most of them seem to work properly. The only known exceptions are the Sony CDU-55s and CDU-76s which do not play music CDs properly using our driver.

If you are installing a SCSI 2, a triple speed, or quad speed CD-ROM we recommend you download a newer driver. The newer driver is contained in the self-extracting file CDRUPG.EXE. Copy it to the \SOUNDMAN directory, execute it, and it will replace the older driver.

The SoundMan Wave board requires 2 drivers to be installed: the Z5380.SYS driver in the CONFIG.SYS and the MSCDEX driver that comes in DOS 6 in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you do not have DOS 6.0 or later, you may download the MSCDEX.EXE file from Microsoft's BBS (206) 936-6735 and place the file in the DOS directory. Install the drivers as follows: (assuming that the software has been installed in C:\SOUNDMAN)

In CONFIG.SYS: Insert the following line AFTER the line containing SMWSET.SYS:

DEVICEHIGH=C:\SOUNDMAN\Z5380.SYS /D:SMCD000

You may need to add a LASTDRIVE statement if there isn't one already:

LASTDRIVE=Z

In AUTOEXEC.BAT: Insert the MSCDEX.EXE to match the installed Z5380 driver:

C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:SMCD000 /M:10 /E /V

For more information on LASTDRIVE and MSCDEX, please refer to the MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference or on-line Help System.

The README.TXT file in the \SOUNDMAN directory specifies an /M1 parameter on the Z5380.SYS driver. This parameter should be omitted unless you are using a Texel drive and are experiencing problems. The /M1 parameter will cause the CD-ROM to run at a slower burst rate.

To set up the SoundMan SCSI CD-ROM drivers under Windows 95

In CONFIG.SYS:

Insert the following line AFTER the line containing C:\SOUNDMAN\SMWSET.SYS

DEVICEHIGH=C:\SOUNDMAN\Z5380.SYS /M0 /D:SMCD000

NOTE: If you have a 1x or 2x Texel CD ROM drive, change /M0 to /M1 (Texel drives marketed under the name PLEXTOR do not need this change)

You do NOT need to add a LASTDRIVE statement as Windows 95 IO.SYS already has it implemented.

In AUTOEXEC.BAT:

Insert the call to MSCDEX.EXE to match the installed Z5380 driver.

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:SMCD000 /M:10 /E /V

If you are using multiple CD-ROM's, there will be separate entries in the CONFIG.SYS file for each drive. However, MSCDEX will only be loaded once, with a separate /D:xxx parameter specified for each drive. For example:

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:SMCD000 /D:MSCD001 /D:MSCD002 /M:10 /E /V

The order the /D:xxx parameters are loaded determines the drive letter assignment sequence.

Hardware installation and Compatibility

The SCSI interface built into SoundMan Wave should work with any SCSI CD-ROM up to 6x in speed. The SCSI interface is capable of 1 MB sustained data throughput. CD-ROM's faster than 6x exceed the rated throughput of the interface and may not function properly.

Sony 55S drives require a specially modified driver for CD Audio to work under Windows (3.1x and 95). Sony 76S has the same compatibility issue, but currently there is not a driver available to resolve the issue. Version 3.04 of the SoundMan Wave SCSI driver was included with the SoundMan Wave 1.0 disk set. To obtain Version 3.15, please download CDRUPG.EXE. The modifications needed for the Sony 55S drive are as follows:

Use DEBUG from a DOS prompt to modify the existing driver. Make a backup copy of Z5380.SYS called Z5380.OLD.

Then, edit the Z5380.SYS as follows:
Version 3.04 Version 3.15
DEBUG Z5380.SYS DEBUG Z5380.SYS
E 7B2B E 7EAE
20 20
W W
Q Q

Restart the computer and test.

The SoundMan Wave board requires 2 cables to connect to the CD-ROM. The first is a standard 50-pin ribbon cable which may come with the CD-ROM. If the 50-pin cable is not included, it may be purchased at a local computer store. The second cable is required to play music CDs or CDs with analog audio recordings. Most CD-ROMs come with a 3 or 4-pin connector and the SoundMan Wave has a 5-pin connector. This can be corrected in one of the following ways:

1. Replace the connector on the existing cable with a 5-pin connector and wire it according to the chart on page 69 of the SoundMan Wave manual.

2. Purchase a cable from a local computer store which will connect from the CD-ROM to a Media Vision Pro Audio 16 board. The Media Vision board uses the same type of 5-pin connector and pin-out sequence as the SoundMan Wave board.

3. Purchase a replacement cable from one of the following companies:

Pacific Interconnection: (800) 934-2839
SC&T: (800) 760-9004

To connect an external CD-ROM to SoundMan Wave, you need to purchase an external kit which will include all internal, external cables, and additional hardware needed for connecting the drive to SoundMan. The kit can be ordered from:

Pacific Interconnection: (800) 934-2839
SC&T: (800) 760-9004
